Texas

It was December 27th 2011. I was sitting in my doctors office trying to get over a horrible cold when I got the call. The call came from Tony Dennis of Buck X. He had an awesome deal for me. Tony wanted me to do some video work for Buck X and he had a great place for us to go. Roger Harn of Rafter H Outfitters had extended an invitation for us to do some testing of Buck X, run video on some of his great deer, and try to take a couple management bucks. It was an offer I could not refuse so the next day found me on the road headed south to meet Tony and Roger.

The first afternoon we got to camp just in time to throw on our hunting clothes and hit the stand. We put out Buck X and the deer came to it immediatly. I had my buck on the ground in the first 30 minutes. Shortly after that Tony had one on the ground also.

The next three days were packed with some of the best deer hunting I had ever seen. Every sit we would see twenty to fifty deer. One day we literally saw over 100 deer. I was able to take two management bucks and Tony took a nice Texas buck.

Roger has a great deer herd. I can honestly say the quality of hunting we experienced would be hard to beat. Rafter H Outfitters is a 100% fair chase property without a high fence in sight. They offer guided and semi guided hunts for deer, hogs, turkey, dove, quail, chukar, pheasant, ducks, and geese. They also recently purchased some land for mule deer hunting. If you are looking for quality hunt with lots of game and beautiful scenery give Roger Harn at Rafter H Outfitters a call. You can reach him at 817-996-7046.

Lesson Learned

It was a slow start to the 2011 season. Jordan and I have been hunting Evander hard with not as much as a deer sighting. Evander is a stud of a ten point that we had on a summer pattern until the weather turned cool and the beans caught a golden tint. This transition took place just days before the Missouri opener.

Evander just 9 days before the Missouri opener.

After a few days of not seeing Evander we decided to check out some hardwoods for acorns. We headed to a spot we had a camera but had only captured photos of small bucks and does. I knew the deer would be transitioning off the beans and would begin feeding on acorns. We entered the woods and Jordan began checking the camera as I was roaming around looking for oak trees and deer sign. Remember, I have only had this property to hunt since June so I am doing a lot of on the fly scouting.  After a few moments Jordan saw something. He said two words, Big Buck! As soon as those words left his mouth I knew I had screwed up. As he was finding proof that a big deer was using this area I was spreading my human scent around with little reguard to the consequenses. I am the first to preach that after a big deer catches your scent in his area you have lost the game. I should have known that with the onset of summer to fall pattern changes deer we had not seen in a particular area will start to show up as they attempt to make these areas their fall ranges.

This deer was coming in every morning before daylight and heading to a thick wooded area. Even armed with the fact that this deer was coming through before daylight, it was obvious where he was bedding. This is a huge piece of information to try  and pattern this deer before the rut turns him into a roaming target for anyone with enough patience to sit in a stand for more that ten minutes.

This is a perfect example of what could be accomplished by using a Covert Special Ops camera. The Special Ops sends pictures remotely to your cell phone or email. This means I could of had this crucial piece of information without setting foot in the woods. I would have certainly been more careful not to intrude on this guy with a pic like this on my phone. In august I had placed this camera knowing that the deer would transition to acorns and anticipating that i might find a mature deer in this area. I had messed up my own plan.

We set up a Special Ops camera and quietly left the area. That was Saturday September 17th . I am writing this on Monday evening the 19th and we have yet to capture another picture of this deer. That just goes to show you how deer react to human intrusion.  We can only hope that this deer forgives the disturbance and returns to his normal pattern. If he does you can bet our Special Ops camera will let us know. I will keep you informed.

Trail Cams Are Going Up.

Im sitting here this morning listening to the thunder. I know the big thunderstorm cell that I see on the radar is going to ruin my plans for the day. You see this is the day I have been waiting for the last two weeks. On June 11th I carefully placed a couple Covert Scouting Cameras over some Buck X Deer Attractant on a new peice of property I just got permission to hunt. I can barely wait to see what kind of deer are on this property.

When you get a new property this time of year its tough to do any in depth scouting. Normally my scouting starts in January. I would have been able to look at every inch of this new property without the heavy folage. Its far easier to really get the lay of the land at that time of year. I also would have done some heavy duty shed hunting, hoping to find heavy duty sheds! Circumstanses as they are have left me to a more unintrusive way to scout. Thats where a product like Buck X becomes a great tool. Buck X sites all through the property will bring these deer to a location where my Covert Cameras can get me pictures of them. With the pictures I can spend some serious time trying to classify these bucks as shooters or not. It makes it a lot easier in November to pass a buck that you beleive has more potential. It also helps keep you in the stand on cold days when you know a monster is roaming around. I will be placing many more sites on this and my other properties to try to locate the core areas of some deer to name and keep track of. For now I will be sitting here hoping it stops raining soon so I can get to work. Keep up with my progress on this property by subscribing to this blog and on upcoming episodes of Full Drawn Pursuit.
